Consider how to make a shadow theater with your own hands at home and what you need for this.

What can become a shadow theater

Of course, the main characters in any shadow theater plot will be the shadows themselves. However, there may be several options for how and on what they can be obtained.

	Hand movements	You can make a theater with your own hands in the literal sense of these words. Probably, many, at a convenient angle and occasion, create all kinds of figurines of birds, fish, animals from their hands on the wall. But you can turn improvisation into a real art if you learn how to correctly group your hands for a particular character.
	Shadow theater on the wall	If you have a large spotlight or lamp at home, as well as a lot of free space, you can direct the light at an angle to a wall that does not have unnecessary objects. Children stand under these rays and begin to act out scenes, I'm interested in poses. Figures cut from a stencil can also be reflected on the wall. You can cover the spotlight itself and the "screenwriters" with a screen made with your own hands from chairs and bedspreads.
	Performance on stage	The audience sits in the dark, and in front of them is a "screen". Manipulation with figures made of cardboard, wood or plain paper takes place between the front wall of the stage and the lamp.

How to make a shadow theater with your own hands at home

If with the first two options it’s quite simple to come up with everything, then with the third one you need to try. You can go the simple route and use a simple cardboard box as the basis for the scene. For example, from household appliances. A white sheet or thin white paper is stretched over the box. Special paper for patterns is also suitable - it has an optimal density and does not shine through.

Figures can be made with your own hands from different materials, but cardboard is best suited for this role, because it will be possible to cut out thin details from it (handles, legs, tails, smooth curves). You can come up with characters yourself or use stencils.

Initially, cut out two identical parts from cardboard and, when gluing them, lay a part of the cane inside from below.
Glue the cane to the back of the figurine with tape. You can take a tube, cut its tip into strips, arrange them to the sides and glue these strips to the back of the hero.

The cane itself can be a wooden skewer, a toothpick, a plastic tube. The decorations are made in the same way as the characters and are attached to the foam or any other material suitable for this.

If you want to make shadow theater even more interesting for children with your own hands, you can make individual parts of the characters movable. They are cut out and attached to the main part with wire or thread. To do this, holes are made on both sides. The moving part also needs to be attached to a skewer, or even better - put on a thread, for which the child himself can pull up at the right time - the character’s arm or leg will magically rise, the bird will fly away.

In this case, the light source can be an ordinary lamp, which will shine at a right angle to the back of the stage, highlighting the figures of shadow theater heroes. But it would still be safer to use a flashlight.

Interesting exciting games that can be used with great enthusiasm by children in kindergarten and at children's birthday parties. You can start by staging the simplest ordinary fairy tales, where only 3-4 characters are used (for example, “Ryaba the Hen”), and then do original performances with children for grandparents in several hands.

Imagine - evening twilight, tightly drawn curtains and spectators frozen in anticipation of a miracle. Soon, near the most ordinary lamp, a magical performance will begin, woven from almost nothing. The shadow theater is a fascinating spectacle that children of all ages like, from one-year-olds to primary schoolchildren, who are happy to take part in the preparation of the performance and come up with their own fairy tales for the shadow performance.

What is shadow theater?

Finger theater is the shadows that appear on the screen due to the different positions of the hands and the interlacing of the fingers of the "director". Most often these are images of well-known animals, but professionals can show human faces or some inanimate objects. It's great for fine motor skills and coordination.

Puppet theater is a performance using ready-made figures and scenery. The characters are cut out of cardboard, fixed on sticks and moved according to the action. Due to the fact that almost everything can be cut out of cardboard, the puppet theater of shadows is an endless field for the flight of children's imagination.

What do you need for home shadow theater?

1. Light source - it can be a simple table lamp, a tourist flashlight and any other lamp with a directional light.

2. Screen - is a translucent white plane that can be made from different materials - tracing paper, a white thin sheet, ordinary Whatman paper or sheets of white paper fastened together in a joint. The frame for the screen can be a cut-out lid from any box, an artistic stretcher, a two-story children's bed - any design that you can put the screen on. can be made from an unfolded shoe box, pull a sheet over a bunk bed. A small "stage" is suitable for simple finger performances, and if you want to prepare a real puppet show, it is better to make a spacious large screen where the whole story will fit.

3. Sets and characters - choose what you want to start with. If you decide to try finger theater, practice with your child to fold their palms and fingers in such a way that “live” images of animals appear on the screen. A dog can bark, a crocodile can open its toothy mouth, a bunny can move its ears - whatever you think of. For the puppet theater, you will need thick cardboard, from which you will cut out the scenery and figures.

Helpful Hints:

1. The screen must be placed between the audience and the lamp. The actors are between the lamp and the screen. Keep in mind that the lamp heats up and it is best not to touch the light source during the performance.

2. In order for the shadows to be clear, the light should fall directly, and not from the side, and the lamp should not be close, but two or three meters from the wall.

3. The light source should always be behind the screen and slightly to the side. Stand so that the shadow from your body almost does not fall on the screen, and the shadow from the hands is evenly clear.

4. It is better to paint cardboard figures with black paint, then they will be contrasting and noticeable on the screen.

5. The size of the shadows on the screen depends on the distance from the figurine to the light source. To make the figure smaller, bring it close to the screen. To make it grow in size - place it away. It is better to fasten the scenery close to the screen with adhesive tape or bent paper clips so that they do not move during the performance, and small directors will have an extra pair of hands.

6. If the kids like home theater, make a real curtain, tickets and programs. During the performance, you can arrange a real intermission with an impromptu buffet.

5. Start with a small number of characters - two or three is enough for the first time. With practice, you can easily move on to more complex settings.

6. To make the performance "coloured", use colored light bulbs or filters that can be attached to the lamp. For night scenes - a blue filter, for morning scenes - a red one, and so on.

7. The figurines can be made movable by wrapping arms, legs, wings and tails with soft wire. Instead of sticks that hold the characters, use regular drinking straws.

You can organize a stage for a shadow theater from an old box and cut out the silhouettes of the main characters from it, turn on the lamp and the fairy tale will come to life right before your eyes. So let's get started.

1. Making a scene

At the bottom of the old box, we outline a rectangle for the screen.

The outline does not have to be rectangular. The edges can be rounded and decorative patterns added. Thus, the box for the shadow theater will take on an absolutely magical look.

Cut out a hole.

We color this holey box (the item is optional, but it will look neater this way).

On the inside, glue a sheet of paper slightly larger than the hole in size.

2. Hero on a stick

On the sheet we draw the characters of a fairy tale, but rather we print out ready-made templates.

We cut out the characters, stick them on cardboard of any density. Cut out the silhouettes and fix on a stick. For this, electrical tape, a glue gun or adhesive tape are suitable. I used duct tape and a glue gun just to be sure)

The farther the characters are from the screen, the more blurry their silhouettes appear. In order to keep the scene stable, but to have access "behind the scenes", I made a hole in the supporting wall. Thus, the characters became closer to the screen, and it became easier to control them.

Keeping all the heroes in one hand is almost impossible. Even with the "Pockmarked Hen" it was difficult. In order not to hold inactive characters in hand, we will make small cuts at the base of the stage. These cuts will hold heroes well on small skewers. If you use, for example, popsicle sticks, then the cuts will be slightly different.

4. Making a show

The do-it-yourself shadow theater is almost ready, it remains to install our design. We put the lamp behind and direct it to the screen. And then we follow the script and become directors.

I have long wanted to make a shadow theater and now ... there, tadam, I found time! Or rather, we made it together with Maxim. Yes, not as neatly as I would have done it myself, but the fact that my son was directly involved in the creation of the fantasy and the whole creative process was “in the subject” is important to me. And also, because he absolutely did not know what a theater was, at first he climbed into the cut-out screen, thought that it was a house with an exit, then he decided that it was a TV, it was funny to watch him. The process of making a shadow theater brought both of us the pleasure of joint creativity, and watching the performance for Maxim turned out to be magical, I really, really liked it! I asked for repetition several times, I barely managed to turn off the theater with the words “everyone in the theater is getting ready for bed, and tomorrow they are invited to a new performance”, it’s good that I made preparations of heroes for several fairy tales! Now we have a traditional night performance before going to bed, otherwise by the evening Maxim is very active, jumping, including on me :), the theater managed to distract and calm him down.

A lot has already been written about the contribution to the development of the imagination and fantasies of the child by playing with shadows, I will not repeat. I can only say that before the shadow theater appeared in our country, I tried to show Maxim the shadows with my hands and this interested him, but I didn’t even doubt the success of showing a whole fairy tale in the dark, with the cozy light of a flashlight!

And yet, I cherish the idea that after several performances Maxim himself wants to be a puppeteer. At first, his toys will become spectators, and then I hope he will invite us, the circle of spectators can be gradually expanded ... Such a game is very, very useful for a child for: the development of speech, imagination and fantasy, as well as to overcome the fear of speaking in public.

I decided to take a swing at such a large-scale joint craft as a shadow theater. Maxim demands to do crafts or draw every day, despite the fact that the weather is great and we spend almost all the time outdoors.

Making a screen for the theater is very easy, especially if you have a large box, all that remains is to cut the screen itself. But unfortunately I did not have a box of the desired size (50 * 70), but there was a sheet of corrugated cardboard. I cut out the size I needed from it, bent the sides, fixed it with adhesive tape, made legs for stability and cut the screen to fit the height of the tracing paper roll (baking paper), I tried to make it longer to fit all the fairy-tale characters. I cut out the letters for the name "theater" from the same cardboard.

You don’t need to decorate the resulting screen, but I decided that it would look boring like that, and I wanted Maxim to work as an artist and also enjoy the creative process, he just loves when we have a large-scale craft, for example, how our New Year's advent calendar.

A friend came to visit Maksimka, I handed them brushes and they gladly painted the blank in black, black because the screen we have will be cheerful, dressed in a zebra skin :) It will be easy for Maxim to draw uneven stripes :).

He painted the letters, made up the word "theater" from them and read the syllables.

Maxim completely painted everything himself, I just explained the sequence of work.

When the paint on the workpiece dried up, I glued tracing paper onto the screen with adhesive tape.

I sketched the characters for the shadow theater and cut them out of black cardboard, attached them with tape to wooden skewers.

I got 3 stories:

For the presentation, you need a dark room and a flashlight or a dim lamp, it is placed behind the screen a little to the right. Here I already adjust myself so that the shadows are not elongated.
