Life position of Ivan Timofeevich. The image and characteristics of Ivan Timofeevich in the story of Kuprin Olesya essay

Olesya Ivan Timofeevich
Social status Ordinary girl. Urban intellectual. "Barin", as Manuilikha and Olesya call him, "panych" calls Yarmila.
Lifestyle, activities She lives with her grandmother in the forest and is satisfied with her life. Does not recognize hunting. She loves animals and takes care of them. A city dweller who, by the will of fate, ended up in a remote village. Tries to write stories. In the village I hoped to find many legends, stories, but I got bored very quickly. The only entertainment was hunting.
Attitude towards the hero of other people People do not understand and do not accept it. Relations with the peasants were limited only to the fact that they took off their hats in front of him and said: “Guy bug”, which meant “God help”. He tried to talk to them, but they looked at him with surprise, did not understand even simple questions, and all tried to kiss his hands.
Attitude towards people He does not communicate with people and does not strive for this. “It would be better if they left me and my grandmother alone,” says Olesya. "Evil...people here, ruthless...". Ivan Timofeevich does not find a common language with ordinary people, but he wants to benefit people: he treats peasants, teaches Yarmola to read and write. But for them, he still remains a stranger.
Behavioral Features An open and honest girl. He does not hide his feelings, emotions. He restrains his spiritual impulses.
Love Everything is given to the feeling of love. Ready for any sacrifice for the sake of her beloved (goes to church, where village women attacked her). But, realizing what an abyss separates her and Ivan Timofeevich, she leaves him. Not capable of a strong feeling. She does not accept Olesya for who she is. Sets a condition: either he, or "witchcraft." When Olesya hides from him, he quickly calms down.
Character Smart, strong, whole nature, capable of high feelings and courageous deeds. Growing up in the woods of Polissya, she is distinguished by her rude independence. She is a proud girl. Olesya does as she sees fit. She doesn't care what other people think. Smart, educated, intelligent. Soft, weak character. He likes to take over people, but more often it is the other way around. Sometimes he can't figure himself out. Incapable of going against people's opinion.
The relationship between Olesya and Ivan Timofeevich She fell in love with Ivan Timofeevich passionately, selflessly, despite all his shortcomings, realizing that their love had no future. Olesya was carried away, he was attracted by her unusualness, beauty. He "enjoyed ... healthy, sensual love." And although he confesses his love to Olesya, his feeling can hardly be called love. Rather, he is afraid of his feelings. He accepted her sacrifices (he knew how her trip to church would end, but did not stop her).
speech, voice Resounding and strong, with unexpected velvety notes. Matches the character. Expressiveness and sophistication of phrases in conversation. Soft, pleading tone. Matches the character.
The attitude of the author to the hero Together with Ivan Timofeevich, the author admires Olesya. She uses the following evaluative vocabulary to describe her: young, slender, easy-going, beautiful. "The original beauty of the face", which once seen, do not forget. He likes her love of freedom, spontaneity, honesty, openness, kindness. It is in the first person: the attitude of the author to his hero is determined by the thoughts of the hero, by how he himself evaluates his actions. It can be seen that the author sympathizes with the hero, because Ivan Timofeevich does not try to relieve himself of guilt for some impartial acts.
outlook Olesya is smart, but does not recognize science. And she explains her unusual abilities only by the fact that their family is cursed, that it is the devil who helps her. Ivan Timofeevich is inclined to explain all Olesya's abilities from a scientific point of view (hypnosis, psychiatry, physiology).
Question about marriage Olesya believes that their union is impossible. The decision to marry grew stronger in the soul of Ivan Timofeevich, and in the end he stopped seeing him as a challenge to society. And finally he made an offer to Olesya.
    • The image of nature is organic for the artistic world of Kuprin and is inextricably linked with his concept of man. One can distinguish a number of works of the writer, in which nature occupies an important place. Such are the picturesque Polissya cycle, lyrical miniatures "Woodcocks", "Night in the Forest", reflections on natural phenomena - "Empty Cottages" (early autumn), "Golden Rooster" (sunrise). This also adjoins the cycle of lyrical essays about the Balaklava fishermen "Listrigons". For the first time, Kuprin's concept of man and nature was […]

    • Nikolai Vera Portrait of heroes There is no description of the heroes in the story. Kuprin, it seems to me, intentionally avoids this method of characterization in order to draw the reader's attention to the internal state of the characters, to show their experiences. Characteristic Helplessness, passivity (“Almazov sat without taking off his coat, he turned away...”); irritability (“Almazov quickly turned to his wife and spoke hotly and irritably”); displeasure (“Nikolai Evgenievich frowned all over, as if […]
    • Kuprin depicts true love as the highest value of the world, as an incomprehensible mystery. For such an all-consuming feeling, there is no question “to be or not to be?”, It is devoid of doubt, and therefore often fraught with tragedy. “Love is always a tragedy,” wrote Kuprin, “always struggle and achievement, always joy and fear, resurrection and death.” Kuprin was deeply convinced that even an unrequited feeling can transform a person's life. He spoke about this wisely and touchingly in the "Garnet Bracelet", a […]
    • The mystery of love is eternal. Many writers and poets unsuccessfully tried to solve it. Russian word artists dedicated the best pages of their works to the great feeling of love. Love awakens and incredibly enhances the best qualities in a person's soul, makes him capable of creativity. The happiness of love cannot be compared with anything: the human soul flies, it is free and full of delight. The lover is ready to embrace the whole world, move mountains, forces are revealed in him that he did not even suspect. Kuprin owns wonderful […]
    • The theme of the search for happiness is one of the key themes in the works of Russian classical literature, but few authors manage to reveal it as deeply and at the same time laconicly, as Kuprin does in the story "The Lilac Bush". The story is not at all large in volume, and there is only one storyline in it - the relationship between Nikolai Almazov and his wife, Verochka. Both heroes of this work are looking for happiness, each in their own way, and each is quite successful. Almazov is a young, ambitious officer who longs for fame and a brilliant career. At […]
    • Essay-reasoning Plan: 1. Introduction 2. Main part a) the theme of love in the work b) the question of human happiness c) the problem of people's behavior in difficult life situations 3. Conclusion Alexander Kuprin's story "The Lilac Bush" was written in 1984, and refers to the early work of the author. But it reveals the skill of the writer, his ability to subtly convey the psychological state of the characters. A small-scale work carries a deep content, raises many important and […]

    • The Thunderstorm by A. N. Ostrovsky made a strong and deep impression on his contemporaries. Many critics were inspired by this work. However, in our time it has not ceased to be interesting and topical. Raised to the category of classical drama, it still arouses interest. The arbitrariness of the "older" generation lasts for many years, but some event must occur that could break the patriarchal tyranny. Such an event is the protest and death of Katerina, which awakened other […]

    • As was customary in classicism, the heroes of the comedy "Undergrowth" are clearly divided into negative and positive. However, the most memorable, vivid are still negative characters, despite their despotism and ignorance: Mrs. Prostakova, her brother Taras Skotinin and Mitrofan himself. They are interesting and ambiguous. It is with them that comic situations are associated, full of humor, bright liveliness of dialogues. Positive characters do not evoke such vivid emotions, although they are reasoners, reflecting […]

  • A frequent hero of the literature of the late 19th century is an intellectual who does not develop a life path due to his passivity, indecision, inability to find a place in life, laziness, fear of life and committing acts.

So, kind, but weak, smart, but inactive, appears before us the hero of Alexander Kuprin's story "Olesya" - Ivan Timofeevich.

    Character characteristic

A man, somewhat sated with life, not rich, but spoiled, finds himself in the wilderness, in the forests of Polissya. Boredom, pursuing him in a remote village, pushes him to the fact that "out of idleness" the hero begins to teach and heal ordinary people, and it seems that this boredom haunted him and the world from which he fled. Fate brings him a meeting with a local savage and witch, the girl Olesya. The hero falls in love, driven by the girl's mystical charms, her exoticism compared to the hero's usual surroundings, her beauty, naturalness, merging with nature. However, the hero can neither make a decision regarding marriage with the forest beauty, nor protect her from a hostile society, he unmistakably sees the impossibility of this union. As a result, the story ends tragically - Olesya is attacked by the villagers and decides to disappear from the life of the hero herself. They will not see each other again, Olesya secretly leaves, leaving in the memory of the hero bright, unlike memories of their dates and, as a symbol of this brightness, a scarlet string of coral beads.

(Gennady Voropaev as Ivan Timofeevich, film "Olesya", USSR 1971)

The narration is conducted on behalf of Ivan Timofeevich, therefore the reader does not have a clear external portrait, the external image is made up of a fragmentary description given by Olesya and other heroes of the story. Ivan considers himself to be a “quiet and modest” person, prone to a “wandering” life, which means that we have a person without roots, without family and love. By the time Ivan arrived in Polesie, he was a novice writer who managed to print a story in a small newspaper (the way he speaks of the publication - "newspaper" - and how he calls his work the word "emboss" indicates a low appreciation of his opuses).

With people, he is simple and quite hospitable, helps the poor Yarmola, saves his family from starvation and heals the surrounding peasants.

The main features and qualities, the psychological portrait of the character

Much more honestly and more psychologism speaks about Ivan's opinion from the outside. And this is Olesya's opinion when the girl tells him fortune-telling: kind, but weak, but rather indifferent, condoning. That is, Ivan's kindness is not a desire, but rather benevolence, following etiquette. His heart is lazy and cold, and he is not master of his word. Easily succumbs to the destructive influence of alcohol, passions, as a result of which, Olesya claims, there can be a lot of grief in his life. According to Olesya’s prediction, a “lazy” heart will not allow suicide in the future - Ivan will have great grief, but due to his tendency to indifference, he will be able to “survive it like that”, although he will be tempted to lay hands on himself.

The psychological portrait presented by Olesya is most likely correct, although the reader does not know how his life developed after meeting with the forest sorceress. Ivan really turned out to be greedy for beauty (he didn’t believe in any witchcraft, but became interested in a witch, came to her house and fell in love with a fatal forest princess, not thinking at all about the consequences), but he preferred not to think about the consequences, he quickly caught fire with ideas, but quickly cooled down (attempts to get closer to the people, to educate them, to find out did not lead to anything), he did nothing to stop Olesya from going to the temple, as a result of which a tragedy happened.

    The image in the work

(Ivan - Gennady Voropaev and Yarmola - Borislav Borundukov on the hunt, frame from the film "Olesya", USSR 1971)

With Yarmola, Ivan converges on one passion - hunting. There is a time when he is not interested in anything and does not please, except for forest landscapes, he feels a certain inseparability from forest paths. He feels the need to be as natural a person as Olesya was in her native forest. Only such naturalness seems beautiful to the hero, and Olesya's words - wise and accurate.

(Olesya - Lyudmila Chursina; Ivan - Gennady Voropaev, frame from the film "Olesya", USSR 1971)

That is why one sees a clear contrast between the images of Olesya and Ivan and the chanting of the image of a natural person. Ivan, an intellectual, an educated person and a writer, but he has no place either in the wilderness or in the world, as there are lies, human passions, vulgarity, narrow-mindedness or ignorance all around. Olesya, like a pure ray of light in a forest clearing, flickers in his life, but Ivan does not grow up to her, morally he loses to her inimitable nobility, her mercy, selflessness, kindness, self-giving. And this is the tragedy of the entire Russian intelligentsia of the 19th century - to start and quit, fall in love and betray, live, going with the flow and not finding a place everywhere.

Ivan Timofeevich (Vanechka) is a storyteller, an urban intellectual, an aspiring writer.
I.T. on official business is in Polissya. There, being on a hunt and getting lost in the forest, the hero meets the beautiful Alena (Olesya, in Polessky).
After this meeting, the image of Olesya did not get out of I.T.'s head: he found in the girl an innate nobility, "graceful moderation." Attracted I.T. and the girl's "reputation as a witch," her "life in the woods." But most of all, the hero was fascinated by Olesya's "solid, original nature, ... mind."
During the second meeting, the girl tells fortunes to the hero, naming his main features: “although kind, but only weak ... Kindness ... not good, not cordial. He is not the master of his word, "to women" painfully eager. He will not be able to love anyone, because "the heart ... is cold, lazy." As a result, Olesya predicts I.T. “great love from the lady of clubs”, through which “she will take a big shame ... will accept”. By a fatal coincidence, soon Olesya herself falls in love with the “barich” I.T. The characters are in a relationship. I.T. puts a condition before the girl: either he or her witchcraft. The hero persuades Olesya to go to church. There, village women attack her like a witch. Coming to Olesya, I.T. finds her sick from the experience of fright and humiliation. The next day after the incident, having again come to the girl, the hero discovers that "the hut was empty." And only a string of red corals hung on the window reminded me of Oles. I.T. almost immediately comes to terms with what happened.
